The Chair of Peter

Ordinary Time – the Feast of the Chair of Peter

A feast day to celebrate a chair? But not just any chair. The chair of Peter is the seat of the bishop of Rome, the Pope. Peter stumbled at times in his life, struggling to live up to the challenge of following Jesus and leading the early church. Others who sat in that chair have stumbled as well, some even failed but the office endures.

It’s not about the piece of furniture, but the person who sits in it. In this way, a common piece of furniture can be sanctified by those who sit in it; a common home can become sanctified by the lives of its inhabitants. How are you sanctifying your home?

To the elders among you, I, a fellow elder, a witness of Christ’s sufferings and sharer in the glory that is to be revealed, make this appeal. God’s flock is in your midst; give it a shepherd’s care. Watch over it willingly as God would have you do.”   1 Peter 5:1-2a
