Pothole Season

Lent – Season of Change

We are in the season for potholes. With the spring thaw and rain, potholes are popping up everywhere, more numerous than the crocuses and daffodils. Soon work crews will be out undertaking the chore of filling them in.

We know it is only a temporary fix for a long term problem – the problem of our crumbling infrastructure and the need for massive road repairs. A complete overhaul of our roads is needed. They need to be dug up and redone, a job requiring the expenditure of large sums of tax-payer money. So far Congress has not had the political will power to provide this funding. And so they put this task off, while the roads continue to get worse. It’s a matter of pay now or pay later – or pay now and pay later as we pay through the damage these potholes do to our cars.

I wonder, are there areas in my life where I am just patching potholes instead of doing the hard work a complete overhaul would entail? Do I have the will to do what is needed?

“I will give them a new heart and put a new spirit within them; I will remove the stony heart from their bodies, and replace it with a natural heart.”   Ezekiel 11:19
