A Lifetime of Service

Lent – Preparing for Holy Week

Jesus, before leaving this world, had one more lesson to impart to his disciples. He taught not just with words, but with actions. And so he washed their feet as a sign of service. How well he knew the hearts of people, how leaders often lorded it over those they lead. He was ahead of his time in showing that truly great leaders don’t set themselves above those they lead.

Power corrupts and well Jesus knew this. It corrupts even the most devoted leaders. By staying close to those they lead, by serving them, there was less chance of being corrupted.

If even Jesus knew his need to lead through service, how much more do we need to lead by example, through service.

If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.     John 13:14-15
