What Is Truth?
Holy Week – Season of Passion
“What is truth?” Pilate asks Jesus, and well he may, well might we ask the same in this day and age of relativity where everyone thinks they define their own truth. What is truth?
Truth is relative in many ways. It is relative to the people and circumstances but there is also a truth that is unchanging, tried and true. There is truth rooted in certain principles such as the Golden Rule and other rules of behavior like the charge in Scripture to care for those who are poor and unfortunate and to love your enemies.
Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth and the light.” There is a truth that is in Jesus, embodied in him and that is him. It is unchanging and everlasting, relevant for all times. This is the truth we need to cling to in times of trial, in times of doubt.
“For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” John 18:37-38
