Do This In Remembrance of Me
HOLY THURSDAY
Each time we celebrate the Eucharist we are told, “Do this in remembrance of me.” What does it mean to remember? When we remember, we re-member, we put back together. That which was broken is made whole again.
At funerals we re-member our loved ones. We share our stories and memories about the one we loved and in doing so we put back together that which had been broken. Our loved one who is gone from us, is within us in our memories. The family re-members, is put back together, reconstituted as a whole family not a broken family.
And so every time we share the Eucharist we re-member, we are made whole again, joined again with the Christian family. We share the story and break the bread and are healed.
For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took break, and after he had given thanks, broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 1 Corinthians 11:23-24
