In the Tomb
Holy Saturday
Jesus didn’t rise immediately. He didn’t come off the cross in a blaze of glory, but spent some time in the tomb. A time to rest, recuperate, before returning to this world. We also need some time off in between big events. We can’t just go from one to the other without some respite in between. It is good to have this short break in time between the Good Friday liturgy and the Easter Vigil. Time to just be, to prepare emotionally for the resurrection.
The tomb isn’t necessarily a bad place to be. When in the midst of the strong emotions of grief, sometimes we collapse into an exhausted sleep, a restorative sleep. It is not a place to live in, but it can be a good place to visit for a while, to walk around in, until ready to depart.
So they laid Jesus there because of the Jewish preparation day; for the tomb was close by. John 19:42
