Seven Weeks of Easter

Easter – Season of New Life

There are six weeks of lent, 40 days, and seven weeks of Easter, 50 days. And so we are reminded that we are to spend more time rejoicing than we spend in grieving and repenting. Our time of celebration for Easter is meant to be longer than the time we spend preparing for it and yet how many of us do this? Easter gets even less time than Christmas in our secular calendar. More often than not it is relegated to one day.

Not so in the church calendar. It is more than a day. It is a season and so we are reminded to continue in the spirit of Easter long after the day is over. This is a spirit of joy knowing our savior lives, knowing that our savior through his death has conquered death for us all.

We need no longer fear death, thanks to Jesus, and yet we do. We have a long way to go before we become the Easter people God has called us to be.

Or are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life.        Romans 6:3-4
