Ascension Thursday – What do we do now?

Easter – Season of New Life

Jesus is taken up into heaven. The disciples are left staring up at the sky where once had been their savior. What to do now? Where to go? They continue to look at the sky, hoping against hope for one more glimpse of their friend, one more word of consolation and instruction. They are left alone yet they had each other and they had their memories of all Jesus had said and done. They needed some time to let it all sink in, to remember and share memories with each other. And so they returned to the upper room, that special place, sacred to them for all they had experienced there. And there they stayed until it was time to go.

Some times after an especially good experience, a wonderful vacation or a moving musical performance, we find ourselves not willing for it to end. We continue to stare into space hoping somehow to hold onto the experience.

Fortunately we are not alone in our experiences, we have companions to share the good times, to share our memories, to share the work load, just as the disciples had each other.

Everything in life will eventually be relegated to the realm of memories. Thank you, God, for the people who share those memories with us until you call us home to you.

“Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.”    Acts 1:11
