Remembering Dad on Father’s Day
Ordinary Time – Season of Stability
Our Father who art in heaven takes on a whole different meaning once your earthly father is gone. No one to call on Father’s Day, to buy tacky ties for or a bottle of his favorite booze. No more wondering what to get someone who has everything. Not that he had everything, he just wanted so little and those few things he wanted he went out and got for himself.
He was just as happy watching a local high school sport as a big league event, especially if his kids were involved. He had no great desire for fifty yard seats at the Rose Bowl, being content to watch from the comfort of his own home.
No more calling to talk and having him pass the phone to mom. I miss him, but I wouldn’t have him back, not after the suffering he went through the last years of his life. Not now that he is young again, playing cards with his buddies who went before him. Not now that he is in heaven.
So on Father’s day I think to myself, “My Father who art in heaven, Don is your name!” And I thank God for good men like my dad. Ordinary men who take on the extraordinary task of being a father.
Hear, O children, a father’s instruction, be attentive, that you may gain understanding. Proverbs 4:1
