An Ordinary Birthday

 June 26, 2017

Today is my birthday. It isn’t a landmark one with a 0 or 5 at the end. There hardly seems to be a reason to celebrate this one. After you reach a certain age, it seems redundant to celebrate your birthday every year. The years slide by so quickly, it seems more appropriate to only celebrate every five years, and then celebrate well. Unlike the child for whom each birthday is a momentous accomplishment requiring a party to mark the day, once you’ve passed the big 5 0, it can be tempting to just let the years slide by without a reminder of their passing.

To turn 61, after hitting 60 last year, is no big deal, yet there is reason to celebrate. God has given me another year to enjoy this earth and all the people thereon. God has blessed me with another day to feel the sun on my face, hear the wind blow through the trees, smell the hint of lilacs, and taste . . . so much to taste! All the good fruits of the earth. How delightful to savor the smell of coffee in the morning, sip wine at night, let chocolate melt in my mouth . . .

Every day is someone’s birthday. And so there is reason to celebrate. Every day is another blessing from God.

This is the day that the Lord has made, let us be glad and rejoice in it.   Psalm 118:24
