Prayers for a More Perfect Union – Happy Fourth!
“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union . . .” – the opening lines of the preamble to the Constitution. Here we are, over 200 years later and we are so far from that perfect union the preamble talks about. We appear to be more divided than ever, at least if you listen to all of the rhetoric coming from both of our political parties. And yet, if we set aside all the rhetoric, and look at all the beliefs we hold in common, I suspect we are more united than we realize.
The words of the Declaration of Independence still hold true. “We hold these truths to be self-evident . . .”
Jesus, in his final discourse before he died, prayed for unity. “So that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you.” (John 17:21)
Let us take a moment this Fourth of July to pray for unity – that our party leaders will put aside their self-interest and work together for good of the Union.
