NaNoWriMo – Winner, Winner, Steak Dinner!

 December 1, 2017

Now doesn’t that sound more celebratory than a chicken dinner? That’s how we celebrate in my family! Steaks, preferably rare and cooked on a grill.

On Wednesday at 5p.m. I entered the winner’s circle, having completed my 50,000 words for the NaNoWriMo challenge. The novel isn’t done yet. I have at least another 5,000 to 10,000 words to go to be done with my first draft. But for now, I’m taking a break and celebrating.

How did I do this? I have asked myself that as well. I didn’t think I was going to make it this year. After spending a week away and writing over 20,000 words the first full week of November, I stalled the next week. Too many meetings and other responsibilities. I only wrote 3,000 words that week giving me only 27,000 words going into Thanksgiving week. I don’t usually plan on writing much that week because of family and fun, however I surprised myself and wrote 10,000 words leaving me with only 13,000 to write the final days of November, a manageable goal.

Sunday night though I realized I had no idea how to get to where I wanted to go. I prayed for insights, hoping that I would wake up with some ideas. Mistake – sort of. I woke up at 1:30 and didn’t fall back to sleep until 4a.m. but by then I knew how to get to the next step in my writing process. I wrote 7,000 words on Monday, 3,000 on Tuesday, and the remaining 3,000 on Wednesday.

How did I do it? I attribute it to God’s assistance as I prayed my way through every step this past week. And with God’s help, I plan to finish, just not this week. I’m taking a break. I plan to finish next week, then maybe T-Bone Tuesday at Steak’s Eatery.

What about you? Did you participate in NaNoWriMo this year? And if so, how far did you go? Any words written are better than no words.

Wishing everyone a wonderful December after the craziness of November!
