God’s Conspiracy Theory

 August 3, 2021

Conspiracy theories are everywhere. They tell of dark evil cabals threatening human existence, plotting the overturn of society as we know it, putting profits over people and running the world based on their own designs. All of the talk about conspiracies got me thinking – does God have a conspiracy theory? And if so, what does God’s conspiracy theory look like?

Problem with Conspiracy Theories

I’m not a fan of conspiracy theories. This doesn’t mean there is no truth in any of them. The strongest lies have a kernel of truth behind them. The problem I have with conspiracy theories is that they play to the worst in people and bring this out. They play to people’s fears and distrust, encouraging more fear and distrust.

Most of the time, the powers behind the conspiracy don’t have the people’s best interest in mind but rather their own political agenda or power grab. With the easy access and platform social media gives to reach people, any nut case with a social media account can claim what they want, the crazier the better. There are no restraints or editors fact-checking what they claim. If blocked from one account, they find another.

Conspiring for Peace

In my youth I was part of a group that organized peaceful demonstrations at William’s International for their part in making cruise missiles—part of the nuclear arsenal. We were arrested and charged with conspiracy to break the peace. I loved the idea. We were conspiring for peace—to break the false peace that was the nuclear weapons build-up at the time. I mean, we already had enough weapons to destroy the world several times over. How many more did we need?

To conspire is to breath with. We were breathing for peace; working for peace with our every breath. We even made buttons – “I conspire for peace.”

God’s Conspiracy Theory

So what does God’s conspiracy theory look like?

God takes human conspiracy theories and turns them upside down. Instead of bringing out the worst in people, God brings out the best. God creates trust, actively working behind the scenes for our good. Only we don’t always cooperate with God. God conspires for the good of people against those who destroy and tear down.

It’s a whole different world view—a world where people are basically good and want what is best for everyone versus a world full of evil conspirators. Some of these conspiracy theorists may insist they are working for good, for freedom and the constitution, but I question that. Humans are fallible and even with the best intent, make mistakes and foul things up.

I question anyone who suggests they know better than me what is best for me, except for in the case of God. God knows what’s best for me and the whole world better than anyone else. God’s love surpasses human love and is free of the self-interest that so often clouds human judgment.

Maybe it’s time for buttons that read—”I conspire with God.” I believe in God’s conspiracy theory. Do you?

“The world is a looking-glass, and gives back to every man the reflection of his own face. Frown at it, and it will in turn look sourly upon you; laugh at it and with it, and it is a jolly kind companion; and so let all young persons take their choice.”

– William Makepeace Thackeray
