PALM SUNDAY – Well Begun . . .
Holy Week – Season of Passion
The sun is shining, children run about playing with palms given to them by their parents as we prepare to begin our service. It truly is a great day. A good way to start this holiest of weeks.
A light breeze blows through threatening to blow away song sheets. All is well. Parents corral their children and whisper to them to hush as the opening words are spoken. The priest blesses the people and the palms. We listen to the words of Jesus’ triumphal entrance into Jerusalem. “Hosannah! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” And we process in.
The choir leads the way, leaving those of us who are bringing up the rear to struggle with the song. We reach the sanctuary only to realize we are a verse behind those already inside. No matter.
All is quiet for the reading. Parents remove palms from restless hands lest the temptation to tickle the person in front with the tip of the palm or to poke their brother or sister with it prove too great. We sit in somber silence and listen to the well known words.
“The Lord God has given me a well-trained tongue . . .”
Another Holy week has begun. Well begun is half done.
At the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Philippians 2:10-11
