Psalm 93 – Robed in Majesty
Have you ever wondered what clothes God wears? What does it look like to be robed in majesty, as found in Psalm 93 – robed in majesty?
Psalm 93
Psalm 93 is a short but strong testament to the glory of God. God reigns over all the earth. His garment is majesty, his armor strength.
“The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established, firm and secure.” (1)
Our God, who existed and will exist through all eternity, sits on his throne.
“Your throne was established long ago; you are from all eternity.” (2)
The seas proclaim the Lord. As mighty as the seas are, our God is mightier.
“The seas have lifted up, Lord, the seas have lifted up their voice; the seas have lifted up their pounding waves.
Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea—the Lord on high is mighty.” (3-4)
While God is robed in majesty, God’s house is decorated with holiness.
“Your statutes, Lord, stand firm; holiness adorns your house for endless days.” (5)
And so, the Lord rules for endless days, for all eternity.
Robed in Majesty
In Revelations we hear about a woman “clothed in the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars.” (Rev. 12:1) Some refer to this woman as Mary, the mother of Jesus. In the appearance of Mary as the Lady of Guadalupe, she wears a cloak adorned with stars, rays of the sun emanate around her, and she stands on a crescent moon. She wears the sky.
What greater robes of majesty?
I imagine God clothed with the sky, reigning over the world with majesty, with all the colors of the sunrise, or with the power of thunder, clothed in dark clouds. Or God riding on the waves with water swirling about him like a robe.
Just as God’s house is adorned with holiness, God is adorned with holiness. What does that look like? In Isaiah we hear “Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist.” (Is. 11:5) Paul tells us in Ephesians to put on God’s armor: “Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (14-17)
What better clothes for God to wear than righteousness and truth?
Psalm 93 – Robed in Majesty
Psalm 93 – robed in majesty, invites us to imagine what God’s clothes might look like. It sets the imagination free to see God over the seas and in the sky.
It also reminds us that we need to wear righteousness and truth around our bodies as a testament to our faith, like our God.
What does God look like? What clothes do you imagine God wears?
