Summer Dreams
Sometimes I dream of escaping my problems and my humdrum life, of traveling to faraway places–spending a summer in Paris or sunning for a week on the Riviera, cruising the Mediterranean or island-hopping in Greece. I imagine sailing down the Nile or the Amazon into the interiors of the continents. I imagine visits to the Orient and Australia.
Sometimes I dream of adventure: white-water rafting, scaling Pike’s Peak, or serving others as a missionary or an ambassador.
Sometimes I dream of moving to a very different place where I would have an exciting job, something important where I could “really make a difference.”
And after I dream, I realize how much work and effort is required to learn a new skill, a new language, a new way of doing things. Each adventure involves risks and hardships and then I think, perhaps I’m better off with the problems I have rather than trading them in for new ones.
There are times to prune and times to let be. There are times to uproot and times to stay put.
Sometimes I just need to live–and grow–where I’m planted.
“Suppose I want him to stay until I come,” Jesus replied, “how does that concern you?” John 21:22
