A Peanut Butter Facial

It was one of our memorable marriage moments. I was serving a tour of duty with the U.S. Army in Seoul, Korea. I was living off base with GiGi and our first son, Erik, in a Seoul apartment house.
Our common entertainment was an evening of card games. And it was during one of those sessions that I hit a winning streak. My wife being highly competitive at cards, I should have foreseen the outcome, but instead we both were caught off guard.
One too many triumphs, a dab too much gloating on my part, and the kettle of GiGi’s patience blew its top. And so my evening snack – a paper plate containing a couple of slices of peanut butter-and-jellied toast – became a sacrifice to my too-robust enjoyment of victory.

Suddenly GiGi, my Norwegian princess, arose in her Viking wrath and wiped that silly grin off my face with peanut butter and jelly. And I? What could I do? I laughed.
Then she did as well. And we both celebrated the occasion by taking a snapshot. And every so often, when I run across that photo, I recall the night of my peanut butter facial.
It was well worth it, for the lessons we both learned that evening.
