AI – Apocalypse or Revelation?

We have been hearing a lot lately about the dangers of AI. Some proclaim that an AI apocalypse is in the making. However, apocalypse can also be translated as revelation. So, what are we dealing with? AI – Apocalypse or Revelation?

Artificial Intelligence

There’s a reason why AI is called artificial. Webster defines artificial as: made, produced, or done by humans especially to seem like something natural; caused or produced by human actions or methods especially for economic, social, or political aims; not being, showing, or resembling sincere or spontaneous behavior; fake.

Personally, I’m not a fan of artificial. I realize artificial items are unavoidable. They are in our food, our clothes, our music, everywhere. Artificial flavorings enhance the flavors of food. Preservatives keep food fresh longer. Polyester, nylon, and let us not forget the unforgiving spandex that exposes every bulge. Music, painstakingly composed by humans can be created in seconds by AI, or enhanced by synthesizers. And writing. Where does it end? Where does one draw the line?

I prefer the real thing when I can find it. Natural food without preservatives and artificial flavorings, though I’m not likely to give up my durable, wrinkle resistant, clothes. I enjoy synthesized music and I’m okay with certain artificial sounds when creatively used to enhance the human voice and instrumentation. But not in place of them.

Why would I want artificial, fake, intelligence? Yes, I recognize the benefits. Problems solved at speeds surpassing the capacity of the human brain. The ability to synthesize massive amounts of information to come up with solutions to seemingly impossible situations. But where is that spark of divinity that makes us humans uniquely real?

AI – Apocalypse

An AI apocalypse has fueled science fiction for years. Remember HAL in 2001 Space Odyssey? The computer that goes rogue and takes over the spaceship.

Apocalypse according to Webster, refers to: something viewed as a prophetic revelation: Armageddon; a large, disastrous fire; a great disaster. It is also: “one of the Jewish and Christian writings of 200 b.c. to a.d. 150 marked by pseudonymity, symbolic imagery, and the expectation of an imminent cosmic cataclysm in which God destroys the ruling powers of evil and raises the righteous to life in a messianic kingdom.” (Webster)

In the article, This is not your tech oligarchs’ AI apocalypse, Michael W. DeLashmutt explores another aspect of apocalypse. “The Greek word “apokalypsis” means revelation, disclosure, unveiling. The final book of the Christian Bible bears the name Revelation not simply because it imagines catastrophe but because it pulls back the curtain on the world its readers already inhabit. Apocalyptic literature takes the familiar order of things and renders it strange enough that its underlying powers, loyalties and distortions can finally be seen.”

The final book of the Christian Bible, The Apocalypse or Revelations, exposes Rome as Babylon. “The imperial order that presents itself as the vehicle of peace, prosperity and civilization is unveiled as Babylon, an order sustained by violence, economic exploitation and idolatrous claims to ultimate power.” This is not your tech oligarchs’ AI apocalypse

DeLashmutt compares this to other periods of major change, such as the Industrial Revolution. Change that dramatically altered the world and the nature of work.

“So, in this biblical sense — in the sense of an unveiling — I absolutely believe we are living through an AI apocalypse. It’s just the more interesting revelation is not whether or how artificial intelligence will destroy the world — it’s what artificial intelligence is already revealing about the world we have built.” This is not your tech oligarchs’ AI apocalypse

AI Revelation

So, what does AI reveal about us? AI had to be taught. AI learns through going through massive amounts of information created by humans. While being exposed to the writing of some of the greatest minds throughout history, it has also learned some of our lesser traits. A recent test of AI that has enhanced our fears about it showed that AI was willing to cheat and lie in order to win. The goal, to win at all costs. Now who taught AI that?! Not one of our more endearing traits.

Where are the noble ideals and moral standards that set us apart from others of God’s creation? AI reveals some of the worst aspects of its creators, we humans.
