How Soon Is Soon?

Advent – Season of Hope

“Soon,” a voice whispers in the night to the woman in prayer awaiting the birth of her first child.

“How soon?” she responds.  She hears no answer.

“Soon,” the dying man hears.

“But when?” he asks.  No answer

“Soon,” the voice says to troubled parents waiting for news of their lost daughter.

“When?”  No answer.

“Mom, how soon till Christmas?” the young boy asks.

“Four weeks,” she answers.

“That long. That’s forever,” he complains.

“That soon. I’ll never get everything ready,” she thinks.

How soon is soon?  Today?  Tomorrow?  Next week?  Next year?  Ten years from now?  Daily we are reminded that God’s time is not the same as our time.

Lord, give me the wisdom to view time with an Advent perspective.  Help me to remember that you keep your promises according to your schedule.  Your people waited centuries for your coming–and you came.  Help me to wait.  Help me to trust.

The days are coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and Judah.   Jeremiah 33:14
