Psalm 8 – How Majestic!

 January 23, 2024

My home of Michigan was a frozen tundra last week. Still, as I saw the sun rise in the morning with glistening pinks across the sky and sparkles on the snow, I found myself saying with the writer of Psalm 8 – how majestic!

Psalm 8

Psalm 8 – how majestic, begins and ends with phrase: “Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”

The writer goes on to praise the works of God in nature.

“You have set your glory in the heavens.”

He then contrasts this with mankind.

“When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?

You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor.”
(3-5)

As lowly as we are, God put us in charge of all of God’s creation

You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet:
all flocks and herds,
and the animals of the wild,
the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.”
(6-8)

How Majestic!

Since the end of the pandemic restrictions and my husband’s retirement, I’ve been able to cross this country twice, first a southern route to Arizona, then a northern route to Idaho, finally enjoying the mountainous expanse I’ve witnessed so often in cowboy movies. I’ve also had the opportunity to spend a week on an island off of Kodiak Island Alaska where I marveled at water and mountains. How majestic indeed!

Other words for majestic include – exalted, august, great, awesome, elevated, sublime, lofty, stately, dignified, of royal estate.

As majestic as these natural wonders are, we humans are over them. Isn’t incredible to think that our God entrusted us with all of creation? Is it possible that we humans are majestic as well. – having or showing expressive beauty or dignity?

With all of our foibles and failings, we are part of a royal priesthood, loved into being by our God. We are majestic. How awesome is that?
