The Feast of St. Isidore – Patron of Farmers
Easter – Season of New Life
Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow
All it takes is rake and hoe, and a piece of fertile ground.
Inch by inch, row by row, someone bless these seeds I sow,
Someone warm them from below, till the rain comes tumbling down. The Garden Song
Who is it that blesses the seeds and sends the rains and the sun to help them grow but God. Farmers are naturally attuned to the earth and to the God who makes plants grow. They are aware of their dependence on God for their livelihood, their need for God. They are aware of the importance of work, that a garden doesn’t grow in a day but is the result of hard work, inch by inch, day by day.
St. Isidore, Patron of Farmers
May 15 is the Feast of St. Isidore. Isidore, patron of farmers, is attuned to the earth, to the seasons, to the weather as he plants seeds and watches over them until harvest time. He can teach us about the earth and care for the earth; he can teach us about hard work and dependence on God.
God bless farmers everywhere who, through their hard work, provide food for our tables, and who teach us about dependence on God.
A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. Luke 6:43-44a
