The Power of Non-Violence

Holy Week – Season of Passion

Jesus appeared helpless, like a lamb being led to slaughter, and yet was he? Appearances can be deceiving. Was he even stronger in his weakness than those who beat him? He accepted suffering, taunts, blows without retaliating. Who is stronger, the one who returns blow for blow, jeer for jeer, or the one who stands tall and refuses to return evil for evil, refuses to run away yet refuses to fight.

Gandhi, inspired by Christian Scripture, chose the way of non-violence. Thus this small Indian man in a simple garb was able to bring a great nation, Great Britain, to its knees.

Jesus is remembered two thousand years after his death. Who remembers the names of the men who beat him?

I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting.     Isaiah 50:6
