The Real Fear Factor
Ordinary Time – Happy Halloween!
We love to be scared, until we don’t. We love scary movies about creepy things happening to other people, practical jokes that scare but don’t harm. That’s what Halloween is all about. The fun of getting dressed up, pretending to be someone you aren’t, going out at night and being scared or scaring others.
Fear is an essential emotion. It tells us: beware, something is not right here. To be without fear, fearless, is to be reckless, to risk your life and the life of others. That is not good.
Real fear is not something to be laughed at.
What scares me? The nuclear saber rattling going on between our country and North Korea, the thought of terrorists taking down an airplane that my daughter or other family members might be travelling in, the thought of random shootings at schools attended by my grandchildren, or the thought of super bugs killing my loved ones. These thoughts terrify me. They are not fun.
Some days it takes courage just to get out of bed.
What about you? What scares you? How do you keep going in the face of fear?
I sought the Lord and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Psalm 34:5
