A Cup of Christmas
Merry Christmas! While the Christmas shopping season ended Christmas day, Christmas is more than a day. Remember the twelve days of Christmas? Christmas is a season in the Catholic liturgical calendar, lasting over two weeks, from Christmas day to the Baptism of the Lord in January. All reason to raise a cup of Christmas!
Celebrating this season and continuing my Advent/Christmas reflections on Isaiah, I’m sharing the three passages used for Christmas day.
Isaiah 9:1-6, 62:11-12, 52:7-10
“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwell in the land of gloom a light has shone. You have brought them abundant joy and great rejoicing, as they rejoice before you as at the harvest, as men make merry when dividing spoils. For the yoke that burdened them, the pole on their shoulder, and the rod of their taskmaster you have smashed as on the day of Midian.” 9:1-3
“And they shall be called The holy people, The redeemed of the Lord; and you shall be called Sought out, a city not forsaken.” 62:12
“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good tidings.” 52:7a
A Cup of Christmas Cheer!
All speak of rejoicing, that God has redeemed God’s people. No longer will Jerusalem be considered forsaken for God’s light has broken through the gloom. This is the good tidings shared with the shepherds by the angels on that first Christmas morning. It was good tidings to the Hebrew people while in exile in Babylon centuries before Christ was born and continues to be good tidings to all of us.
We have reasons to raise a cup of Christmas cheer amid the coronavirus pandemic. People are being vaccinated and 2020 is almost over!
But more important, we do not have to despair for we are loved. Our God seeks us out! God has broken the yoke of sin that had us trapped and set us free. Certainly this is worth spending more than a day on. It warrants its own season.
And so I’m raising a cup of Christmas! Wishing all of you the joy of Christmas, not just for one day but every day.
